Job Description

Overview

Today, United has over 28,000 active flight attendants. We are the largest airline in the world with the most expansive network and continue to grow. Flight attendant roles are highly desired, and no special schooling or college degree is required; you will be fully trained by United.

Your United journey begins with flight attendant training in Houston, TX. Initial Training lasts 6.5 weeks, where you will learn Uniteds safety and service standards. After training, you will be assigned a base in one of our hubs (Chicago, Denver, Houston, Los Angeles, Newark, San Francisco, Washington Dulles) or another flight attendant base location. Relocation funds are not provided. Upon successful completion of training and base orientation, you will become a full-time United employee. During training, United provides a stipend of $140 per week, dual occupancy hotel accommodations, breakfast, and either lunch or dinner depending on the training schedule.

Starting pay: Hourly flight pay begins at $28.88/hour with a top of base scale at $67.11/hour. Seniority-based pay increases apply, with additional compensation for language skills, lead positions, and international trips.

Responsibilities and requirements

In-flight crew proficiencies and safety

  • Safety-first mindset to ensure the highest levels of safety onboard.
  • Display a People-First demeanor and adapt to different customer-facing scenarios; provide excellent service with optimism and compassion; resolve issues effectively; represent United with pride.
  • Flexibility to support Uniteds 24/7 operation, including global assignments, nights, weekends, holidays, and extended hours. Be prepared for reserve assignments and possible time away from base.
  • Dependability and timeliness to meet scheduling and customer expectations.
  • Team player with ability to work independently and as part of a team.

Qualifications and requirements

  • 21 years of age or older at the time of application
  • High school diploma or GED; 2+ years of college preferred
  • At least one year of customer service experience in the service industry (e.g., retail, hospitality, food, teaching/education, aviation, social service)
  • Clear, concise, organized communication; able to speak loudly enough to be heard in an emergency
  • Fluent in English (reading, writing, speaking); proficiency in a second language is highly desirable
  • Second language fluency in languages such as Arabic, Chinese, Dutch, French, German, Greek, Hebrew, Hindi, Italian, Japanese, Korean, Portuguese, Spanish, Tagalog
  • Ability to hear a wide range of sounds
  • Ability to communicate effectively in high-stress situations (evacuations, security threats, delays, medical emergencies, severe weather, turbulence)
  • Professional appearance and grooming; willingness to follow uniform, hair, tattoo, and piercing guidelines
    • Tattoos not permitted on head, hands, fingers, or neck; visible tattoos must be within allowed size and coverage; tattoos must not be offensive
    • Decorative coverings and/or jewelry on teeth or in the mouth not permitted
  • Ability to operate electronic devices (phones, tablets, laptops) for required tasks
  • Valid passport with at least 18 months remaining validity; passport in good condition
  • Ability to travel to all countries United serves without restrictions

Physical and travel requirements

  • Ability to stand, walk, kneel, bend, reach, lift heavy objects (up to 250 lbs on overhead bins or beverage carts), push/pull
  • Ability to pass a functional reach assessment (76-inch vertical, 43.5-inch horizontal, with shoes off)
  • Ability to sit in a jump seat with seatbelt and shoulder harness fastened
  • Must be able to serve and/or sell food and beverages (including alcohol) in a diligent and professional manner
  • Must be legally authorized to work in the United States
  • Must be willing and able to work a flexible schedule to support Uniteds 24/7 operation

Onboarding and training expectations

  • Complete an evacuation drill (including water evacuation) during training
  • Willingness to complete pre-employment DOT drug screen, comprehensive background checks, fingerprinting, and vision/hearing tests
  • Must pass DOT/FAA pre-employment and randomized drug screens; medical/recreational marijuana is prohibited for safety-sensitive duties
  • Undergo a 10-year background check; background must not prohibit travel to United destinations
  • Meet FAA and United hearing and vision requirements (hearing better ear not worse than 40 dB at critical frequencies; 20/40 vision or better with correction)
